ELECTRICAL TECHNICIAN

The Electrical Technician manages all the maintenance and new minor installation work of Vital locations within the FSM, Guam and Nauru. S/he will liaise with the Engineering Manager and the Maintenance Engineer to ensure the site is ready for work. S/he will be responsible for keeping all daily site progress records and updating site progress reports to the Maintenance Engineer. S/he must understand the importance of Vital’s customers and terminal operations while carrying out tasks in the various facilities or on any equipment. The Electrical Technician must ensure all SAFETY procedures are in place prior to any task being carried out, keeping records for daily safety meetings and briefings.

The Electrical Technician must work in accordance to Vital’s HSSE procedures and be knowledgeable in isolation, energy risks, electrical equipment and have the ability to understand electrical circuit diagrams and electrical drawings. A crucial part of the Electrical Technician’s role is to resolve day-to-day issues, attend to breakdowns, perform scheduled maintenance on all assets, and ensure paperwork is filed properly. S/he is responsible for maintaining an adequate and clean workplace and ensuring all critical and serviceable parts are in stock. Each asset must be serviced and maintained in a timely manner and reports submitted to the Maintenance Engineer at the end of a task.

The role of an Electrical Technician therefore requires strong electrical equipment knowledge and fault finding, communication, organizational, problem-solving and analytical skills, along with some administrative skills. S/he will also be required to assist the Maintenance Engineer and Storemen on serviceable and critical parts.

Essential Job Requirements

The Electrical Technician at Vital is considered a maintenance role and as such, is expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to their role and responsibilities at all times. S/he is further expected to have the ability to:

  • Carry out assigned workplans for the operation, repair and maintenance of Vital’s Diesel Power Plant, Fuel terminals and buildings;
  • Ensure prudent inventory management and control of adequate genset and machine spares;
  • Ensure all maintenance statistics and reports are compiled and delivered in a timely and accurate manner to the Maintenance Engineer;
  • Assist in the preparation of annual maintenance budgets and maintenance plans for all Vital assets and activities;
  • Assist in the continual improvement of General electrical operational activities for increased productivity, increased efficiency and to maintain high standards for asset management;
  • Prepare check sheets for the various inspection and maintenance work;
  • Inspect, test and carry out work to ensure compliance with specifications and safety work standards;
  • Carry out the inspection and regulation of installed plants and equipment in the power stations, terminals and buildings;
  • Assist in the provision of on-the-job training of employees;
  • Report any change in power station system elements or plant/wirings and ensure drawings are amended;
  • Check, control and account for all electrical items used and follow up in the replenishing of stock items;
  • Ensure proper management of Specialized Tools and Test Equipment used by the Maintenance Team;
  • Oversee the management and upkeep of work area and facilities;
  • Be responsible for general maintenance and upkeep of Power Stations and depots;
  • Ensure compliance of the Company’s Safety rules and procedures;
  • Carry out any other work as required by the Maintenance Engineer or Project Managers.

S/he is to ensure that all tasks performed are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with the company’s operating procedure guideline.

Knowledge & Experience

We are seeking individuals with:

Essential:

  • Minimum Diploma in Electrical or 10 years in similar industry
  • Electrical license or Wireman License
  • Use of electrical testing equipment
  • Ability to understand and interpret CAD drawings
  • Experience in heavy equipment installation and maintenance
  • Understanding of relevant electrical International Standards
  • Verbal comprehension (understands oral and written communications)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Computer skills with good ability to use MS Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, MS Visio
  • Good communication and problem solving skills
  • Ability to read and understand reports
  • Ability to lift up no more than fifty pounds
  • FSM citizenship

Desirable:

  • Some mechanical skills with heavy equipment
  • Experience in an operation or industry where work deliveries must always be accurate and on time
  • Preferable skills as welder, fitter or plant maintenance
  • Ability to stoop/bend/kneel/crouch/balance/climb
  • Incident/accident investigation skills such as the Tripod method
  • Experience with NDT testing methods and its application
