Chief Mate – Landing Craft

Vital operates a fleet of boats in the Chuuk Lagoon for the Coconut for Life (C4L) program. Vessels include water taxi, work boats and landing craft. Operations are mainly within Chuuk Lagoon, but may also involve voyages to Chuuk’s outer islands, transporting finished goods, raw materials and equipment to and from the Chuuk coconut processing facilities.

The Chief Mate is second in command of the landing craft and it is his/her duty to assist with management of the vessel in such a manner as to ensure the safety and wellbeing of passengers and crew.  And they also must conduct ship’s affairs in accordance with established policies and direction from the Captain.

The company relies on the Chief Mate to set a high standard of personal and professional conduct, and to maintain shipboard morale and respect for the company’s purpose and mission.

Essential Job Requirements

• Full responsibility for the safe and efficient navigation and operation of vessel and drive vessel as required
• Supervision of crew members so that they understand & perform duties adequately
• Supervision of all aspects of vessel operations including transportation, fuel & lubes, cleanliness, and appearance of vessel
Supervision of the loading and unloading of vessels ensuring correct vessel stability and trim
• Supervision of all schedules for vessel including maintenance programs, navigational watches on standing orders.
• Adhering to safety guidelines for proper handling of vessels and manage and ensure proper inventory of safety gear
• Assistance with regular drills/training of crew including Man Overboard (MOB), Fire, and Abandon ship
• Routine assessments of weather and other marine risks and prepare and execute plans to ensure safety of assets crew and public as needed
• Supervision of planning and provisioning vessel as required for each voyage
• Reporting as required to Captain
• Compliance with all Vital policies & procedures, documentation & reporting requirements, and safety management & security systems
• Understanding handling characteristics of the vessel (maneuvering, docking, anchoring, etc.) as well as the operation of critical systems (electronic navigation aids, steering, de-watering, safety apparatus, etc.)
• Assistance with training and orientation to new crew members
• Supervision all passenger activities; a radio watch will be maintained during all off-vessel excursions
• Performing other relevant duties as assigned

S/he is to ensure that all tasks performed are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with the company’s operating procedure guideline.

Knowledge & Experience

We are seeking individuals with:

Essential

– FSM citizenship
– Appropriate FSM Ships Mate Certification or equivalent
– First aid/CPR training
– Basic safety training
– Five years of relevant experience as captain/master or mate of landing craft
– Pre-employment drug screening, reference checks and background check
– Sufficiently acute hearing, eyesight and depth perception to meet the demands of at-sea service.
– Capability of using escape hatches and boarding /disembarking survival craft unassisted

Desirable:

– Outgoing and friendly demeanor, able to engage and communicate easily with passengers and crew
